How to Use These Summer Writing Prompts in Spanish in Your Classroom

There are so many ways to use these summer activities in Spanish depending on your goals and your students’ needs. Here are a few of my favorite classroom-tested ideas:

1. Writing Warm-Ups

Use one slide each day as a quick daily writing prompt. Your students can respond in their journals or on a half-page graphic organizer. This routine builds fluency and helps students practice organizing their ideas in Spanish.

2. Speaking Practice

Have students turn to a partner and discuss their answers. Encourage full sentences like: “Yo prefiero ir al zoológico porque me gustan los animales.” You can even have students ask each other follow-up questions to extend the conversation.

3. Movement-Based Brain Break

Assign one side of the room to each option. Read the prompt aloud, and have students walk to the side they agree with. Then pair them up with someone who made the same choice and let them explain their reasoning. It’s a great way to break up the day while still using academic language.

4. Classroom Debates

Use a high-interest prompt to divide the class into two teams. Give each side time to brainstorm reasons for their choice, then let them share their arguments in Spanish. This is an excellent way to practice persuasive language in a low-stakes environment.

5. Bulletin Board Writing

Pick one prompt a week and turn student responses into a display. You can even pair the writing with student drawings to create a colorful and personalized el verano bulletin board.
